Hi all, I am trying to install ArcGIS Desktop on my MacBook Pro on Parallels 7. I have a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and have 2500 MB of memory allocated to Parallels system. When I try to install, I keep getting the error "error 1311. source file not found: X:\Desktop\setup1.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it" I have tried installing directly from the ArcGIS Desktop 10 Education Edition disk and I have also tried to save all software from the disk to the C: drive on the Parallels Windows, but both produce this same error.

Once it hits this error, I cannot install the software. Anybody have an idea of how I can get around this and install the software? Thanks.

I do more configurations in VMWare Fusion but  that looks to be an issue with Parallels and your DVD, I think the Windows guest OS is losing its connection to the DVD.  You know not to be sharing apps between OSX and Windows as in the above best practices.

So try this--if you have access to an external DVD reader, connect it after you've launched the Windows guest OS. You should be given the option of using it in OSX or exclusively in the Windows session. Make it exclusive and load the DVD. Launch the ESRI.exe install panel and all should proceed to completion from the DVD.

Alternative would be to download the .ISO image of the DVD from the ESRI trial site. And then to mount the ISO image inside your Windows VM using a utility application. Try the above first, post back if still stuck and you'd like to try the ISO download and mount for the install. We'll give you detailed instructions.

Just wanted to say thank you to all of you for your suggestions. just following up on this...

in the case that anyone happens across this same problem on parallels 7 on a macbook, what i ended up doing was:

  • copying the ArcGIS software from the DVD onto the C: drive in Windows in my Parallels 7 virtual window

  • Then, I went into C: wherever I saved the software and went into the Desktop folder and then into Python folder and double-clicked python-2.6.5 Windows Installer

  • Then, I followed all steps to install Python

  • I also went into PythonWin and clicked on pywin32-212.win32-py2.6 application and followed all steps to install.

  • After that, I went back to the ESRI application and double-clicked it to start installation. This installation worked.

It appears that it merely gets stuck at a point where a certain component of the software is not installing and so it holds up the installation process. This seems to force that component through. In any case, after you follow these steps, I believe, this should work to install ArcGIS Desktop 10 on Parallels 7 on a Mac. This may have been one part of what you all suggested to do, but it ended up working just great.

Again, thanks all for your help.
