Hello Pipeline Community,

Please take a moment to view the webinar recording, "ArcGIS System Patterns for Pipeline Operators," that took place on September 5, 2024. You can also find and share the recording here:  Webinar Recording

In this webinar, we reviewed the basis of the following eight core ArcGIS system patterns, best practices, and methodologies for building more complex business systems. Plus, we demonstrated some examples of how this all comes together for your organization.

  • Location services systems
  • Self-service mapping, analysis, and sharing systems
  • Enterprise application hosting and management systems
  • Data editing and management systems
  • Imagery data management systems
  • Mobile operations and offline data management systems
  • Big data analytics systems
  • Real-time data streaming and analytics systems

Select Questions and Responses Posed during the Webinar:

  • Jeff, where would the Direct Assessment (DA) inspection processes for non-piggable systems (ICDA, ECDA, SCCDA, etc..) fit into your proposed workflows. Is it on your radar?
    • We are currently considering several business systems to define.   This will be a multi-year process, with Pipeline Data Management System being the first.   We are currently socializing this new concept with both Partners and Pipeline Operators.  I could easily see that a Direct Assessment Inspection or Management System being valuable to our community.
  • Are you considering partners only those folks who provide software? What about services only partners?
    • Yes, not all of these systems may require 3rd party software, but most, if not all systems, will require partners with both a deep understanding of the Esri platform, how to implement and configure it, and also have SME staff well versed in pipeline workflows to successfully implement them.
  • The most interesting things happen when the edges of disparate disciplines intersect. The Esri ecosphere is getting to be large enough that it has separate spheres internally. There are now technologies within the platform that many operators are unfamiliar with: ArcGIS Knowledge, GeoAnalytics Engine, ArcGIS Image, Deep Learning Libraries, etc. Can you please tell us about how Esri is weaving these new technologies into the Well Architected Framework for pipeline operators?
    • The technologies listed above are key “legos” that we will need to leverage as we build out the definitions of these business systems.   As we define the business requirement for each system we will look to leverage these new Esri capabilities to bring more value to the organizations.  I think its also critical to look at existing business workflow that may have been defined years ago, with the technology that existing at the time, and see if any of these new capabilities would more easily solve those problems.   ArcGIS Knowledge comes to mind.  A graph database may be more appropriate to manage large, complex, relationships that we were able to accomplish with complicated database relationship, but may be more easily handled, and scaled, with Knowledge.

Best,

The Esri Pipeline Team
