Problem with Near tool - Chapter 6

I ran the Near tool as specified on pages 219/220, but I keep getting a -1 in all of the rows for the Near_FID and Near_Dist columns in the FiveSites attribute table. Any thoughts on what I did incorrectly?

Heh. I guess I should've just gone to the book's web site because I would've seen this almost right away: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/communities/understanding-gis/01w300000006000000.htm. Oops.

tl;dr version: when running the Near tool, use FiveSites as the input feature, LARiver as the Near Features and enter a value of 2 and set the units to Miles, then click on OK.

I retraced my steps by going back to page 216 and I got the same result. This is pretty much a blocker for the rest of this chapter.
