Hi,

Has anyone else encountered this issue?:

in ArcGis 3.5 desktop

  •    edit an item's metadata
    • save/apply
  •    edit another item's metadata
    • save/apply
  •    return to first item and unable to edit metadata; states:
    • 'metadata is not available for this item, this item must support metadata and you must have write access'
    • without fail this happens each time

*current solution in close ArcGis Pro all the way and re-open then edit is allowed

Please let me know what you think this might be...

Sincerely,
Christopher

In the screenshot you shared, although it looks like the Map item is selected, the actual active selection within the contents pane is the Maps container. As a result, the Edit button does not launch the editor.

Please refer to the attached image, which highlights the difference between selecting the Maps container versus the individual Map item.

Thanks for submitting the user question. To help us reproduce and narrow down the cause of the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

These would be helpful:

  1. What type of item(s) are you trying to launch the metadata editor for?
  2. Where are you selecting the item before clicking Edit - in the catalog view, contents pane, or any other location?
  3. Are any other items selected when you click the Edit button?
  4. Are you using the Edit button in the Metadata group on the Catalog tab, or the Edit Metadata option from the right-click context menu?
  5. If possible, please include a new screenshot of the warning message - ideally showing the full Pro window to help us understand the project state.

1: feature classes, map, and layout

2: catalog view

3: no

4: Edit in Metadata group, catalog tab

5: see attached.

state is after

1)opening highlighted map with edit, editing metadata, save and close,

2) open layout with edit, edit metadata, save and close,

3)re-open map from step 1...

Sincerely,
Christopher

Thanks for sharing the details and the screengrab. It looks like even though the map is selected in the catalog view, the Edit button is trying to open the metadata editor for the Maps container that’s also selected in the contents pane. We’re aware of this behavior and it’s something we’re looking into addressing. In the meantime, a workaround is to reselect the map in the catalog view before clicking the Edit button.

please elaborate; as it seems to me *as indicated in this screenshot, that only the map in catalog view is selected.
