GIS Online - Individual User

Hi, I'm Todd. I'm a refugee from the StoryMaps blog platform, and I'm over my head with GIS online. I have no background or education in GIS. I'm an individual user, so I have no organization and therefore no data sources other than public ones.

My initial interest is to track my city's bike/ped master plan because they don't. I don't think they have any GIS folks on staff, so every few years, they outsource to a consultant who updates their facilities map.

I deployed the Active Transportation solution, but I have no idea how to get my data into it. Where should I look for help? This is my very first attempt at building anything here.

Hey @ToddNelson2

Here's a link to get started with solutions if you haven't already seen: https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-solutions/latest/get-started/deploy-an-arcgis-solution.htm

You should be able to use the solution out of the box, with opening or downloading it from Online, do you have access to ArcGIS Pro? If so, then you can more than likely get started using it in there. If you're needing to add the data, I would make sure that the data is in a File Geodatabase format or a shape file, then you can drag it into the map or your data sources for use!

Thanks, I've deployed the solution successfully, but don't understand how to get data. (I'm only GIS Online, not Pro.)

The data I want to use is a Feature Layer. How do I access the data in a File Geodatabase format?

Do I need to ask the author to make it available for export?

Hey @ToddNelson2

In your environment, are you licensed as a creator? This has info:

https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/administer/user-types-orgs.htm

How to do it is go to Organization > Members > and then find your account and assign your user type to Creator, just to be sure I would also ask the author to make it available for export just in case!

Thanks Cody,

My user type is "Personal Use" as I am the only person in my organization. Either way, I found that the city made the data available as a ZIP, so I could upload the shape file. None of the fields were compatible with the field types in the solution I'm using, unfortunately. But I fudged it enough to get the locations right, and there are fewer than 200 records, so I can manually fix them. So I'm good for now. I'm learning slowly.
