Spatial reference does not match data frame

Hello:

I am attempting to add two layers to ArcMap, a raster image and a shapefile. I have checked and they both appear to have the same spatial reference. The problem is that when both layers appear in the TOC, I can only get one of the layers to display. I can switch the display from layer to layer by using the "zoom to layer" option. When I try to edit, I get the error message: "Spatial reference does not match data frame". I have checked though and it appears that the spatial references are the same.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mel

one isn't... insert two data frames...add one file to one and the other to the other...mouse around the screen and look at the coordinates...are they the same?  if the Define Projection tool was used instead of the Project tool (which produces a new file) then it is possible to define it wrong

Thanks Dan: I ended up reprojecting the layers into the same coordinate system and they now both display great.
