I would like to change legend names, so they are not called the same as the .lyr-files. Any ideas?

To give graphics to what Wes said...

Sample DEFAULT......

Change layer name and names etc with Layer Properties

....

And for me, I wanted to eliminate the "For Display" and "TransType" grouping, so I used the Legend Properties - Items - Style editor to change how the layername and symbols are displayed

.......

Take time to explore the Legend Properties dialog box after you've gone thru the insert wizard.  there are many options beyond what the default wizard allows.  Working with legends—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

In the table of contents slow click the names you want to change and change them. You can also right click the layer in the table of contents and choose properties and on the general tab you would be able to change the name there. Changing the name in the table of contents changes the name in the legend.
