Export to PDF - Legend items

Hello,

Is there a way to export a map to PDF (using the Advanced/Export PDF Layers), so that toggling on/off a layer will also toggle on/off the element in the map legend (yes, am aware that the Legend typically gets clumped into a single layout elements layer above the data frame)?

Had the same requirement before and the only way I could make it work was to export to pdf with legend and without legend for each combination. I then put together the individual pdf's in Acrobat Pro as separate layers you can turn on or off.
