Geodatabase Objects Report

This seems like a rudimentary topic but I'm not finding much. I'm looking for a way to generate a report by interrogating our geodatabases report simple metrics (number of feature classes by type, number of features in each feature class, number of tables, number of records in each table, etc...). I don't see any native tools that accomplish this sort of recap. We could create our own SQL queries, but I though I'd inquire here first.

I'd like to keep track of this information as a general communication piece about what exactly my team does. We've been mindfully practicing theAdam Carnow‌ mantra of GIS <> MAP and teaching ourselves to respond that we help people make better decisions by understanding the importance of location! If I had simple metrics like a general report of the databases we maintain, we could add to the mantra things like "we manage well over a million records of location information", etc...

Thanks for any input. I'm sure it's relatively simple. My thinking cap isn't on very well today!

ArcGIS Monitor with the eGDB health toolkit will provide these metrics.

You can find more about ArcGIS Monitor here:

I also recommend looking at this customer created solution leveraging Operations Dashboard: Esri Database Monitoring Dashboard

This is a customer created solution, so not supported officially by Esri.

There are 2 things you setup,

  • A a python script to scrape the data and a service template to be able to consume the data through REST:

         https://jctngis.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=d5fddc40cc4b4664be3cca01c4075f8f#overview

  • And the actual Operations Dashboard Template:

         http://jctngis.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=4efe5870e05d42688c1d41db45d85d01#overview

AGAIN!  this is a user created tool and is not officially supported in any way.  With that being said, it is a good solution to get at what you're looking to achieve if you do not have ArcGIS Monitor.

Brian:

Thanks for the shout out. Here are some ideas:

  • You should check into ArcGIS Monitor, it may provide you with the capabilities you are looking for: https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-monitor/overview

  • Attached is an example of an ArcGIS Operations Dashboard deployed by Johnson City, TN that shows statistics from their GIS. This may be what you are looking for. If so, we can connect you with them.

  • Here is a link to a Story Map from Kenton Co., KY on their integration of ArcGIS and OpenGov to track their work: https://arcg.is/0HXauL

  • I understand your need to show value, I think GDB statistics are good, but that’s hard for an executive to understand. Just because you’re busy, doesn’t mean you are providing value. I would suggest focusing on some real, tangible ROI numbers.

  • Check out this presentation from Wade Kloos on GIS ROI: https://youtu.be/Mne2U9bFVVA

  • Think about sharing your stories of success on social media (Twitter, LinkedIn)

  • or using a blog like Kenton Co., KY does: https://linkgis.org/

  • or as part of an open data web site like this one from Lake Co., FL: https://geohub-lcgis.opendata.arcgis.com/pages/gis-case-studies

  • You should also at least once a year present to the leaders in your organization on your annual accomplishments and the plans for next year. Some of our users do this using a Story Map.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I may do to assist.

Regards,

Adam
