Whether Esri technical certifications, GISP designation, or other relevant credentials, professional certifications can play an important role in career development. Each certification journey comes with its own challenges and rewards. For some, certifications validate existing expertise. For others, they can represent the development of new capabilities.
Have you pursued GIS certifications or professional credentials? If so, tell us about your experience. What motivated you to pursue it (or them)? How did you prepare? What impact has it had on your career?
If, on the other hand, you're currently working toward a certification, share where you are in the process! And if you've been considering one but haven't started yet, talk about what's holding you back and feel encouraged to ask the community of users for advice.
Hi Jesse. I earned my GISP a long time ago and I did it just for me; there was no benefit with my employer. I wanted to prove to myself I met the qualifications. Ten years later that certification was a requirement for a job I applied for and earned: Executive Director a GISCI.
Today, ASPRS, Esri and GISCI certifications can be a requirement or bonus for employment. But never forget that there is personal benefit as certifications require you to work hard to gain the skills and knowledge to earn them. Certifications are an investment in the profession and an investment in yourself.
These are great points, @TonySpicci-GISP: Beyond the possibility that certain certifications may be required for certain roles, what it takes to achieve them can be a huge benefit all its own. The timing of your comment is good as I saw you just published a highly relevant blog article: Charting Your Course: A New Way to Navigate the Path to GISP®. Thanks for sharing your experience and insights!
I earned an Esri Technical Certification to validate my GIS knowledge and challenge myself professionally.
To prepare, I completed Esri Academy training, worked through practical exercises in ArcGIS Pro, and reviewed the official documentation. The certification process helped me identify areas where I needed to improve and strengthened my confidence in using GIS tools.
Since earning the certification, I've felt more confident taking on GIS projects and discussing technical topics with colleagues. I believe it's been a valuable step in my professional development.
I love that example, @martinalexandros. Thanks for sharing how the certification and your preparation for it have had a positive impact on how you feel and perform!
