Job Title: IT Solutions Architect/Cloud Architect

Location: 100% Remote

 

The IT Solutions Architect/Cloud Architect shall support the accomplishment of activities related to scientific high- performance computing within cloud computing platforms, such as, but not limited to modeling, analysis and optimization of scientific codes and algorithms. The contractor shall gather information to reproduce problems for users and system environments, report bugs and follow through on resolutions. The contractor shall apply technical skills and diplomacy in working with scientists, administrators, and staff on troubleshooting system issues. The contractor shall provide application and system performance analysis, undertaking focused projects on profiling, optimization and tuning of user codes, benchmarking, profiling, and debugging parallel programs that involve MPI calls and OpenMP directives. The contractor shall provide training courses and webinars for researchers on the use of high-performance computing systems and software in cloud environments, gather technical information and provide subject-matter expertise for user documentation, primarily in the areas of scientific computing, supercomputing, and data analytics on various cloud platforms.

 

The specific skills required include, but are not limited to:

  • Cloud platform certification in Amazon, Microsoft, or Google cloud
  • Familiarity with earth-science modeling and scientific computing use
  • Ability to analyze modeling workflows and recommend appropriate advanced computing environments, provide guidance and documentation on best practices for different platforms.
  • Demonstrated working skill with programs composed in Fortran 90 and/or C/C++ programming languages.
  • Experience with modifying/composing workflows using C/Korn/Bash/perl/Python scripts.
  • Knowledge of SLURM and/or other HPC job schedulers.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, debugging, operating, and optimizing scientific models and their use in advanced computing
  • Good working knowledge of high performance, high throughput, and cloud computing systems, advanced data storage technologies, and high-speed network interfaces and their use concepts.
  • Demonstrated experience with multi-threading and parallel processing tools such as parallel profilers, optimizers, and debuggers.
  • Knowledge of AWS ParallelCluster and use of HTCondor in cloud environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in infrastructure as code concepts and application, Cloud Formation or Terra Form experience in deploying cloud-based systems and services
  • Strong understanding of access management, roles, and permissions on computing platforms including clusters and cloud-based platforms
  • Demonstrated understanding of MPI concepts, such as rank and communicators, as well as with the OpenMP programming paradigms.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools, g., MATLAB, R, Python with NumPy, SciPy, NetCDF and other related modules.
  • In-depth understanding of data management best practices & data architecture
  • Be able to conduct training workshops, webinars, and one-on-one training sessions
  • Provide science project support for the use of high-performance scientific computing environment in environmental simulation model applications
  • Strong oral and written communication Ability to communicate effectively and to quickly create clear and concise instructions and documentation. Demonstrated skill in developing and making short presentations on complicated computing topics.
  • Demonstrated skill, good judgment, and ability to meet deadlines in working with a variety of people including users, colleagues, vendors, and experts external to USGS, in a problem-solving context.
  • Experience or education in a scientific discipline (earth sciences, geophysics, geology, hydrology, computer science, computational science or similar background preferred).
