World GIS Day Technical Workshop titled Unlocking the Potential of Geospatial Science in Nigeria; Broadening Applications and Frontiers was held yesterday at the Cooperative Information Network, Ile-Ife.
The keynote speaker was Dr Ayorinde Kappo and participants included representatives of the Oyo State Ministries of Agriculture and Environment, AFRIGIST, ARCSST-E and Community Health Department of OAU, Ile-Ife. Dr. Ayorinde Kappo gave an educative presentation highlighting the new geospatial technologies such as Geo-fencing, Geo-AI, Dashboards and other ESRI products and how they can be applied in various sectors in Nigeria such as Agriculture, Food Security, Environmental Management, Public Health and Security amongst others.
The key highlights included a panel discussion on the Role and Impact of GIS ifor National Development anchored by Mr. Henry Okeke in which the Head of Department, Community Health, Professor Macellina Ijadola committed to inclusion of GIS into the academic curriculum in Community Health Department . She assured that the existing collaboration with COPINE would be expanded to cover more mutual thematic areas of interest. Participants from the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment also expressed their willingness to collaborate with COPINE in applying GIS in carrying out their respective ministerial mandates.
One year free license for ArcGIS Pro was given to selected participants courtesy of the support from ESRI for organizing the workshop.
