Exam Purpose

The Enterprise System Design Professional Exam tests the candidate’s ability to design an advanced GIS for clients that may include custom solutions for unique projects and use cases using best practices.

Target Candidate Audience

The Enterprise System Design Professional Exam is intended for GIS administrators, GIS managers, GIS consultants, partners with experience in GIS architecture and designing enterprise systems.

Description of Qualified Candidate

The Enterprise System Design Professional Exam is designed for candidates with a mid to high level of diverse and varied experience in enterprise system design and implementation. Candidates should have approximately 3-5 years of experience designing and implementing enterprise information systems in small to large organizations and 24-36 months working with Esri's ArcGIS technology.

These candidates should have knowledge of the components of an enterprise solution and perform advanced troubleshooting of enterprise systems. Qualified candidates should be proficient in best practices related to architecture design and capacity planning.

Candidate Qualifications

A qualified candidate should be able to perform the following tasks:

  • Identify server roles
  • Gather functional and nonfunctional requirements
  • Design a highly available deployment of ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Determine the correct security mechanisms for user access
  • Calculate server capacities
  • Determine licensing requirements
  • Define load balancer configurations
  • Design system and data integrations
  • Identify and troubleshoot infrastructure issues
  • Design a disaster recovery strategy
  • Design architectures for cloud and virtualized environments
  • Design virtual desktop infrastructure for clients

The following tasks are considered beyond the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the qualified candidate:

  • Geodatabase administration
  • Application development
  • Perform GIS Analysis
  • Design and deploy Kubernetes
  • Perform migrations

A qualified candidate should be familiar with the following:

  • System Designer
  • ArcGIS Monitor
  • System Log Parser
  • eGDB Health

Skills Measured

Candidates should use the exam content sections below as a checklist to identify gaps between their knowledge and the skills measured by the exam. The relative weight indicates the approximate size of each section. It is recommended that preparation be focused in areas where knowledge gaps are found.

Physical Architecture 37%

  • Apply procedural concepts to document physical architecture that will meet non functional requirements
  • Design a highly available deployment
  • Identify the URLs used in ArcGIS Enterprise federation
  • Given a scenario, use system design inputs to calculate required server capacities
  • Identify supported storage types for on-premises and cloud-based data sources
  • Design a load balancer configuration for a highly available ArcGIS Enterprise system
  • Given a scenario, use knowledge of IT to design a system
  • Apply procedural concepts to adjust architecture to meet constraints
  • Identify the systems requirements for a server role
  • Given a scenario, determine which VDI configuration to use

Solution Architecture 26%

  • Identify ArcGIS Solutions that will be required in the design
  • Identify ArcGIS products that will be required in the design
  • Identify ArcGIS Server roles/extensions that will be required in the design
  • Identify appropriate Data Store Roles
  • Given a scenario, determine authentication methods based on business needs
  • Adjust architectural solution to meet constraints

Deployment and Troubleshooting 15%

  • Apply procedural concepts to select a migration strategy
  • Identify potential system integration issues
  • Interpret results and data from tools
  • Design a deployment plan for an automated cloud deployment
  • Determine which ArcGIS Monitor counter/extension to use

Architectural Concepts 22%

  • Determine when to use workload separation
  • Design system based on environment isolation needs
  • Determine which type of Collaboration to use based on requirements
  • Apply procedural concepts to identify a content delivery strategy
  • Identify methods for backup, replication and/or resiliency
  • Given a scenario, determine when to use tiered architectures
