About Esri Technical Certification Exam Development

The Esri Certification Program works with industry professionals to update each exam to the latest version every 18-24 months. This is done to ensure that the exams test skills relevant to the GIS industry and align with the latest ArcGIS software versions.

But were you aware that we actively seek qualified candidates to participate in our exam development process to validate our exam content? Read on to learn more about our exam development process and how you can participate!

 

Why become an exam development subject matter expert?

Exam development participation provides ArcGIS users the opportunity to support the GIS community and their respective industry by providing valuable input and feedback to help us continuously refine our certification exams. This is crucial to ensure our exams are not only relevant, but valuable as a validation tool in the GIS industry. Some key benefits to exam development participation are:

  • Influence the creation of exam content, providing GIS professionals with new exam versions to validate their skills.
  • Contribute to the growth of the GIS community and join a network of certified individuals with exam development expertise.
  • Obtain a SME Exam Development Badge for recognition of dedication to exam excellence to further stand out as an ArcGIS Subject Matter Expert.

 

Who can participate?

Esri Certification offers foundation, associate, and professional level exams. Candidates with anywhere from 0-4+ years of ArcGIS experience are encouraged to join us and support the development of our different exam levels.

  • Esri customers, partners, distributors, and Esri employees are encouraged to participate
  • When exam development opportunities are posted to Esri Community, it is important to review the details of the exam, especially the exam information guide to ensure you meet the minimum qualifications.

Coming Soon - Earn an “Exam Development Subject Matter Expert” badge for your exam development participation

Coming soon, candidates can earn an Exam Development Subject Matter Expert (SME) badge by participating in 3 out of 4 exam development stages within a 12-month period.

  • Qualified candidates can participate in the development of as many exams as they wish and participation in 3 out of 4 development activities can be for different exams within that 12-month period.
  • Once a candidate successfully completes 3 exam development activities across one or multiple exams, they will be awarded a SME badge for that year.
  • Candidates can earn SME badges annually by participating in exam development opportunities year over year.

Qualified candidates can participate in an upcoming exam development cycle now to start working towards achieving their SME badge by following the steps below:

  1. Visit our exam development opportunities board in the Esri Community to view upcoming participation dates.
  2. Click on each upcoming event to read the details of the opportunity and the exam’s information guide.
  3. Conduct a self-assessment to determine if your current knowledge and skills align with the exam audience definition and the defined "minimally qualified candidate." You can view all of our exams and exam information guides in the Esri Academy.
  4. If you’re ready to participate in an upcoming exam development event, click “Yes" under the "Will you be attending?" section on the page and add the upcoming exam development participation date to your calendar. Then. you will receive an email reminder to participate on the day the exam development event opens and be sent the participation details.
