File geodatabase performance with ArcGIS Server is superb. However, I have a nationwide road featureclass that I�??m using to make cached base maps, and I�??m wondering if draw performance might be better if I moved that into an enterprise geodatabase? Anyone have thoughts on this?
Unless your Enterprise Geodatabase is really maintained well, building the map services from File GDBs stored locally on the server is your fastest option for drawing speeds. When using an Enterprise Geodatabase it is constantly receiving queries which will take slightly longer compared to the file based File Geodatabase. Here are some advantages of using the Enterprise Geodatabase and when you may want to migrate to one:
1. Multi-user editing 2. Archiving 3. Replication 4. Additional security 5. Centrailized location for data

Yesterday I talked with a few other people, and the concensus is the file geodatabase will out perform an enterprise geodatabase when making maps with AGS. There is the recommendation to "compress" the file geodatabase, making it read-only.
