Hello All, We are running ArcGIS / SDE 9.3 on Server (A) which is windows 2003 server and SQL 2005.  We have a new server (B) that is running windows 2012 with SQL 2012 and looking to move ARCGIS Server and SDE to this machine and going to version 10 as that is what the desktops are running.  We are looking at avoiding going to 10.1 for now just with the problems we have seen.  Also does the user on the Desktop need to be an administrator of the domain in order to connect.  This is what the old admin was saying and I am hoping to avoid that scenario?  It seems as though I find parts of what I need but no real direction on what order operations are performed as in do I upgrade then detach and attach on new server then install from scratch or do I just detach attach on new server and proceed with install.  TIA

Brian,

The first thing that comes to my mind, is that the MS SQL Server 2012 is not compatible with ArcSDE 10.0. Second, the Windows 2012 is not a supported platform for ArcGIS Server 10.0

ArcSDE 10 SQL Server Database Requirements:
http://resources.arcgis.com/content/arcsde/10.0/sql-server-system-requirements

ArcGIS Desktop 10 System Requirements:
http://help.arcgis.com/en/systemrequirements/index.html

ArcGIS Server 10 System Requirements:
http://resources.arcgis.com/content/arcgisserver/10.0/arcgis-server-server-requirements

These are just the initials things you have to care off before the migration.

Support for SQL-Server 2012 was introduced at ArcGIS 10.1.  If your 10.0 clients are
SP4 or higher, they should function with a 10.1 ArcSDE database, but I'm not sure about
the SQL-Server 2012 connectivity with Direct Connect (application server should work).
If you really don't want to use ArcGIS 10.1, you should probably use SQL-Server 2008R2.

Ok we are going to get 10.1 on the server.  Also to answer the rest of my question about the Server Migration and what order anyone do this yet?

I would at the least upgrade ArcGIS Desktop to v10.1 on the ArcGIS Server (AGS) machine so you can administer services.  Then upgrade on that machine.  I would then upgrade the remaining desktops.  Then finally I would upgrade SDE.

What type of connections do you make to SDE (service or direct)?

The basic order is somewhat flexible, but I'd recommend:

  1. Post/reconcile, etc with 9.3 tools

  2. Verify geodatabase integrity

  3. Detach database

  4. Copy files to new server

  5. Attach database

  6. Sync users

  7. Upgrade database to 2012

  8. Use Desktop 10.1sp1 to reverify

  9. Use Desktop 10.1sp1 to upgrade

So before the move upgrade them mvoe over the database to the new server?  I am not the GIS guy and and new to ESRI anything so looking for a step by step on how to go from 9.3 to 10.1 but on a different server.  Really looking for guide that explain both processes and in what order as i see docs on both but not together..  I think he just does direct connection I would have to ask.
