Hello,

We have created a copy of our sde database on a new server and now no longer have access to the previous server. I need to update the references in our older mxds to reflect this change. However when I try to open an mxd that references the previous database (either in ArcMap or through the update references tool within ArcCatalog), the tool just hangs, presumably because it can't make the database connection. As a result I am unable to update the references (or even open the mxd).

We are running a V9.2 database and 9.3 desktop tools.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Are you letting the ArcMap session process for a while, it does take a long time to load mxd's where the source is corrupted, but it should eventually load with red asterixes in the layer file.

You'd probably see quicker timeouts if you remapped the unavailable hostname
by updating the hosts file to an invalid network address like 127.0.0.2.

127.0.0.2     unavaliablehost
