Raster projection problem

Is there a way to remove the current projection from a raster file in ArcGIS 10.1? I have tried in ArcCatalog by going to the dataset properties > Edit by the spatial reference section and cleared the projection before applying, but it just goes back to its stinkin' ol' projection. This is making georeferencing sort of impossible.

I have also tried to use Project Raster in ArcMap, but it doesn't seem to change it at all either. I am trying to update an old satellite image of the same area and use the same .shp files without having to shift them all over to match the new satellite image, so anything helps!

Thanks.

Hi,

Is the raster a GRID format? If so, use an Explorer window to browse to the grid. Within the GRID directory, there should be a prj.adf file. You can rename or delete this file or if  the raster has any .aux files rename those and the raster will then show up with an unknown coordinate system.

Thank You,
