Hi guys,

I'll appreciate it if somebody can clarify the following:

I cannot type the name of a new field in the attribute table, nor can I edit the existing fields. Google says I should click a "pencil" icon before that, but there is no "pencil" icon there. Am doing anything wrong?

Thank you.

If you want to add a new attribute field to your attribute table, open the attribute table, click on the upper left dropdown menu that says "Table Options" and click "Add Field..."

If you want to edit existing fields names, open ArcCatalog, navigate to your data, right click on it, choose "Properties...", click on the fieldname you would like to change and rename it.

If you are talking about adding data to your attribute table, you need to start an editing session by clicking on Editor -> Start Editing.

The Editor Pencil you are talking about disappeared with ArcGIS Desktop 10.

Yes, with "Editor>start editing" I've done what I need.

Thank you for helpful advice.

No problem and welcome to the community!

There is a greyed out checkmark on the right side of the post, you can click that and mark it as the answer to your question. This helps ppl that had the same question to quickly find the answer.
