v. 9.3.1

I am trying to find out how to load data from a shapefile in an .mxd into an SDE feature class (appending to an existing feature class, not overwriting or creating new).

In ArcMap you can right-click a layer, choose to save as a SDE feature class, select the SDE feature class and Save.  This will overwrite the existing feature class.

In ArcCatalog you can right-click an SDE feature class and load data from a shapefile

I want to know if there's a way to append from a shapefile to an existing SDE feature class directly from ArcMap.

Thanks in advance,
Wes

Hi Wesley,

There is a geoprocessing tool called 'append' that will do exactly what you are looking for. You can find this tool in Toolbox under Data Management tools > General.

Thanks Russell
I'm a little...actually a lot...embarassed.  I use append all the time, but I've always had to work with shapefiles and/or personal/file geodatabases.  I'm realizing my thinking has been somewhat in a 'box' and working with SDE is not as different as I was assuming (keep in mind we are still nonversioned...hopefully that will change in the near future).

Thanks again,
Wes
