Importing data into ArcMap

I am having trouble importing information from Excel into ArcMap.  I have removed all formulas from the data collection, so it consists of only values, and saved it as a .csv.  ArcMap won't import the data due to "general function failure".  Does anyone know how to get around this?

ArcGIS may have a problem with reading .csv due to delimiter symbol which of your regional settings which is not recognized.

But you don't need to export Excel spreadsheet to .csv to open it in ArcMap. If you have at least ArcGIS 9.2, you can open Excel worksheet directly in ArcMap as a table. Or use Add Data -> Add XY Data wizard to create points from XY coordinates from worksheet.
