How do I assign coordinates or scale down features that I've imported from CAD?

I'm working with ArcMap 10.1 to create a campus map, the features of which (point and line) I imported from a CAD drawing.  When I added a basemap the features' extent was way larger than the actual area.  How do I assign a coordinate system, scale the features down and/or snap them to the map?  I don't have much experience with CAD and this is the first time I've used a CAD drawing in ArcGIS; I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing. 😕

Another way to do it is using Georeferencing tool to georeference the CAD data before export it to GIS format.
