Hi,
I am a spatial analyst and in my work I have encountered with a question.
Which of these softwares are more appropriate for georeferencing Raster data and Why?
ArcGIS or PCI Geomatica

Greetings,

I have to admit I am not overly familiar with how PCI does georeferencing, but the general concept should be the same across most software packages. The user enters the ground control points (GCP) (usually manually) and then saves these points to the image (either adding the transformation to the image or writing out a new image which includes the transformation). Different software has different user interfaces (one window versus 6 windows etc.) but the general concept should remain the same.
Either way, the accuracy should be the same and depends on how well you select your GCPs and the accuracy of the data that you georeference to.
Hope this helps.

Hello
I have used both sets of software to georeference aerial photographs. There is really no difference in the quality of the finished product. As Robert said, the quality of the data that is being used for GCP's, the quality of the data being georeferenced, and the quality of the GCP's themselves is the major difference maker.
PCI Geomatica is specialized remote sensing software that is used almost exclusively with raster data. You can georefernce, mosaic, orthorectify, and add/drop bands in the software on multiple photographs. The processing time, at least I found, is a lot faster in PCI Geomatica.
I had to georeference a couple hundred air photos, and I used PCI Geomatica, mainly because of the large number that I had to georeference and the availability of the software to myself. I guess it really comes down to a users choice, but both sets of software run on the same principles when georeferencing.
Hope that helps
Andrew

PCI now has an extension for achieving this exact requirement inside ArcGIS - GeoImaging Tools for ArcGIS. http://www.youtube.com/pcigeomatics#p/u/6/eeaHFI3zo98.

It plugs right into ArcGIS10 and can be used to create mosaic datasets without duplicating data - leveraging the power of on the fly processing available in ArcGIS10.

Hi
PCI has a tool that works within Arcgis called GeoImaging Tools for ArcGIS. When I played around with their tools, it was easy and accurate. I liked tbe fact that it was automated GCP and they include models as well.
