1. Are you using ArcGIS 10.0? if so.

2. Have you updated your metadata to 10.0? by going to (from ArcMap) "Customize, ArcMap Options, and Metadata".

I hope this help.

Rudy,

I have updated to 10.1 and still get the same error message.

You cannot import any xml file. Why is this?

I get the same error message. I've exported metadata from one MXD to an XML-file, and get the error message when trying to import it to another MXD.

We use ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 (SP1) and ISO 19139 metadata style.

Any input appreciated.

I found a workaround for this.

Firstly: It seems there must exist a metadata file for the item you're trying to import metadata to. For instance, for an MXD there should be a similarily named XML-file (look at the directory in Windows explorer, not ArcCatalog, as that hides the XML-files).

Secondly: In the Import metadata-dialogue: make sure Target Metadata is an XML-file. I tried to import metadata straight to the MXD, but that didn't work. I cannot see the XML files when I browse from the Import Metadata-dialogue, so I just wrote ".xml" after the MXD's path.
