I am a new user of ArcGIS (just thrown in to it).

I am finding out that ArcGIS is not user friendly. Just trying to draw a object (feature) it takes so many steps.

Cannot even find in help how to put a existing feature onto a different layer (same type of features, different colors).

Also having a problem deleting a feature. I select it in editing and the program will not let me delete it. Or if it lets me delete the feature, it will delete the whole drawing (very frustrating). I think I figured it out after 1 hour of trying.

When I started using AutoCAD (over 20 years ago) I don't remember being this frustrated while learning it. I guess I will have to take a clas to learn this program. I tried some of the free tutorials, but they do not show how to draw or edit features.

I guess will stop venting now. I could go on forever.

Thanks for the website Luke.

If it were only that easy to delete a feature.

I want to delete a feature.

I go through the editor toolbar (click on start editing).

A box comes up asking which feature class or layer I would like to edit.

I click onto the feature class or layer (did both). Box goes away.

pick feature i would like to delete.

right click to delete feature. The delete is not on (highlighted)

Go up to the edit pulldown menu. Delete is not on.

Hit delete on keyboard (will not delete)

What am I doing wrong?

Figured out what was going on with it not deleting a polygon.

The feature was shown (the correct color) that it was on a layer, but I gues it was not.

I just cannot beleive it is that difficult to delete a feature.

Sorry if it sounds like I am mad. But this has been going on for some time. I guess I am just venting.

Does anyone have a good hellp site for ArcGIS 10? I really need it.

Thanks

Thanks for the Blog. Very timely. I am also just getting started and need a couple of step-by-step instructions for setting up a project. Any suggestions for step-by-step instructions on the following?

1) How do I locate/identify and select a base map?
2) How do I move my data sets into ArcGIS?

I have just completed going through the "Getting to Know ArcGIS - Desktop" by Ormsby, et.al. While the exercises and information were great, they don't tell me how to do it starting from scratch.

Are there any options for live online tutoring?  I think once I got started, I could reference the manual, and move forward. However, I need a jump start.
