I am an Arc10 user.  I have a .dgn file and I have NEVER worked with this file type before.  I am trying to use it in Arc, but can not seem to get it to work.

First, I defined the projection (using the coordinate system that was used in microstation - NAD83 UTM Zone 14N).

Then, in ArcCatalogue, I right clicked the .dgn file and tried to 'Export to shapefile (multiple)'.

When I added these files to a blank .mxd, they were completely blank.  Absolutely nothing in the attribute table.

Any suggestions on how to get this .dgn to be a .shp would be greatly apprecaited.

Hola Marie,

I wanted to provide you with some documentation from the help, which will give you a great work flow when converting CAD/DGN files into ESRI data format.  I wanted to also see if within ArcCatalog you are able to preview the file. Of you are able to view the file within ArcCatalog but not see anything converted in your recent attempt. I would see if you are able to add the data into ArcMap and have it display. If the data still does not display within ArcMap, I would look the supported CAD/DGN URL provided below. If your data format is a supported format, one suggestion I would make. Is to take the DGN file in Microstation, and then explode it and see if you are able to see the data within wither ArcCatalog/ArcMap, and then attempt to convert it with the work flow provided in the help link. I hope this helps with what you are looking for, if not and you are current with your maintenance, please log a webform and we will be happy to work with you. Gracias, Marie!

What if you can see it in the catalog tree but not the map portion?

If you want to attach the dgn, someone may be able to take a look at it for you.  Or if you call into tech support, they can help you.

Here's what I would look at:
- In Catalog, select the Polyline Feature Class under the Gaston County Medical.DGN CadFeatureDataset.    (In your screenshots, you've selected the feature dataset, not the feature class.)
- Preview it selecting "Table" from the drop down.  Do you see any features?  Check the other feature classes too, particularly the point feature class.
- If not, you may want to look at the Feature Dataset PROPERTIES and see if the levels are all turned off.
- If you DO see features, then select any single DGN feature class and choose the Export to Shapefile (multiple).  You'll need to drag and drop the additional feature classes (skipping Annotation).  This should work for you.  If not, then a call to tech support is warranted.
