Delete raster items in Raster Catalog

Hello everyone,

I noticed very strange behavior that when items in raster catalog are deleted, space in the ArcSDE DB is not released. The space on the disk is released just when whole Raster Catalog is deleted which is very bad, especially when we have Raster Catalogs with more than 800 items in it and someone by mistake loaded 200 rasters, which when they are deleted through ArcCatalog stay in the DB eating space.

In few posts I saw info that it is not possible to delete Raster Catalog items but I didn't find explicit answer on this behavior. Some explanation is that raster can be part of some other catalog and it is not physically deleted because of this. But, why the space in the DB is released when the whole Raster Catalog is deleted? Is the system then aware that this specific raster is not part of any other catalog?

I tested all sderaster comands. In some specific situations sderaster -o truncate can be used, but info on raster scheme is left behind. This command is OK when reloading the data, but it cannot be used to correct the loading errors.

We use ArcSDE 9.2 SP6 with Oracle 10g. In addition we have ArcGIS 9.2 SP6.

Please, comment me on this issue and help if you can. It would be best if you have some procedure to delete item in the catalog and on the disk at the same time.

Cheers
