Data frame scale in inches?

Is there a way to set the data frame to feet?

When I set my scale I have to multiply it by 12 for it to be correct.

So if I want a 1000ft scale, I have to input 12000. Then my bar scales are jacked up, and I have to manually fix them.

Is there a solution for this?

Thanks,

You can change the Map and Display units for the data frame.  Right click the data frame > properties. Under the General tab there is the option to set the units.  There is also the option to change the scale settings (Scale Drop down > customize this list).

What the RF scale literally means though is 1 unit = xxx of the same type of unit so if it is set to 1000 it means 1 in. = 1000 inches AND it means 1 ft. = 1000 feet AND it means 1 cm = 1000 cm AND whatever 1 of any unit = 1000 of any unit... you can add to the customized scale units, but it doesn't really matter selecting it would mean 1 in = 12000 inches AND also 1 ft. = 12000 feet.  What it doesn't and cannot mean is that 1 in = 1000 ft you're mixing apples and oranges. However the units should be changed on the data frame and when you create a scale bar, you should think about how you want it to display and set up all the properties before finalizing (clicking on OK).  I've found that if you don't get it right the first time, it's better to delete the scale bar and start over then trying to modify the properties after the fact.
