I have a polyline grid that has 22000 columns by 28000 rows - the lines intersect each other to show a grid like structure. However, I'd like to simply convert this polyline grid into a real polygon grid shapefile.

I'm aware that if I was at work on my desktop, the full licence version of ArcMap10.0 would allow my 'Feature to Polygon' tool to work, and I'm sure this can be achieved by doing so... however, I'm at home with the laptop and it's got ArcEditor10.0 - and yep - no 'Feature to Polygon' tool available. So, just as I was about to set fire to my laptop, I wondered if there was a way round this.

1) ET GeoWizard software (www.ian-ko.com ) looked great to start with except you have to pay a lot of money to do a covert with more than 100 features. So, no good 😞

2) Use the 'Graphics and Shapes' tool from (www.jennessent.com) to convert, but it just froze my machine. 😞

3) I've tried playing with the Editor in Arc as instructions along the lines of this: (http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/6288-Editing?p=259312)   There were a couple of issues here as there's references to Task: and Targets: that appear to no longer exist in ArcMap 10.0 - and besides... when you try to use the Merge - you get the timer for hours. No, good. 😞

4) Some other refs to using the topology tool during Editor mode... but again, no good. (http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93&f=987&t=200457)

I'm now guessing that unless I buy a 3rd party tool or MapInfo, FME, I'm not going to be able to do this on a laptop...??? am I right?

Any advice would be most welcome?

Hi Clive,

You may be able to easily recreate the grid using the Create Fishnet tool.  This tool gives the option to create a polyline or polygon output.

How on Earth did I miss that. Unless the ArcEdit version doesn't give you the option, back at my desk workstation shows quite clearly that you can choose between Polyline and polygon.

Brilliant, many thanks!
