Hi,

I have installed ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 on a virtual machine, and tried to create a SDE connection to a geodatabase in version 10. The SDE is for SQL Server 2008. SQL Server 2008 Native Client has been installed on the client server. When I tried to connect to the SDE, I got an error in a popup window showing
"Failed to connect to the specified server. Do you wish to continue? Failure to access the DBMS server"
I've tried both direct connect and via application server with the same result. But I have no problem to connect to the SDE on a version 10 client.

Doea anyone have any clue what's going on?

Thanks,

Jason

Jason,

From the error you are encountering it would suggest ArcGIS is having trouble locating or connecting to the SQL Server database server. What connection properties are you using to make the connection in ArcGIS?

I am getting the same message.  I have installed ArcGIS Server on a vertual machine.  In ArcGIS Desktop I can't make a connection to the database server or database.  Any suggestions?

Check the log files in sdehome\etc....it will give you an idea as to what is preventing you from connecting.
