Can an Oracle database Role own a version?  As opposed to an Oracle User owning a version.  It would be great if every user belonging to a role was about to post and reconcile a version owned by that role (rather than each user owning their own version)

Users own tables and versions.  Keep in mind that a "version" is just a label on a state --
there's only a row in a table to keep track, and only one user, while that user can belong
to many roles, and no mechanism for keeping track of the role you want so associate
with the state.

Does that mean in an organisation where staff change roles (eg. data QA role) often, that operating system authentication is unworkable?

Can you explain how you come to the "unworkable" conclusion?  I don't see any
conflicts between version ownership and OS authentication.
