12 million records in a file geodatabase
- drop field takes several minutes
- field calculation on ONE selected record takes minutes
- every operation much, much slower than other applications on the same data
We are now using SQL server to do all the table operations, including testing geocoding, before bringing the data to ArcGIS. It's just too slow. We don't really need the geometry for many of our geocoding tests. The geometry, and ArcGIS in general, is becoming a "use as a last resort" sort of thing. Possibly a "use until we can find something else" sort of thing.
Most of our users are still on ArcView 3.3 because of performance and stability issues with ArcGIS Desktop.
Please, please say that things will be better in 10.1. More software features we don't need in exchange for continued degradation in performance is NOT going to go over well.
