2000 Scholar Paper "Using GIS In Some Environmental Monitoring Projects In Sofia City"
2000 Scgis Scholar Report
(from Convis, 2001 "Conservation Geography", Chapter 10, "International")
From Lubka Roumenina, SCGIS 2000 Scholarship winner:
“The entire area of Kutina village is highly impacted by the coal and uranium mining. A large area is planted with Pinus sylvestris, which is pollution resistant, but it is not native for this area and is not common for this elevation. This GIS allowed us to create a viable reforestation plan and will enable us to determine the success of our restoration plan over time. Similar projects, which are common in the USA, give positive results and the designed plant communities perform very well. Cascadia Quest and the King County World Conservation Corps in Seattle carry out many projects like this with great success. That is why we hope that the restoration attempts in Bulgaria will be successful and will contribute to establishing principles for environmental restoration on the local level. I’d like to thank my teachers in environmental restoration—Cascadia Quest and the King County World Conservation Corps and my GIS teachers—SCGIS and ESRI for the knowledge and experience I acquired during my training with them.”
