ABSTRACT: " A joint project between the national park service and the public lands history center at colorado state university, the goal of this project was to produce gis maps and a story map for scotts bluff national monument that considered space in historic analysis and improved public awareness of the importance of conserving and protecting scotts bluff national monument, an important landmark on the oregon, mormon and california trails. the gis maps and story map supported the project’s claim that the history of scotts bluff national monument, a small, little-known national monument in western nebraska, is significant to national history during american westward expansion. using gis maps and the esri story map platform allowed me to show how different groups of people interacted on the national monument’s land and express change over time. it also allowed me to integrate in-depth information on the local ecology and climate into my historical narrative. audiences will benefit from this project because the story map allows them to learn about the monument’s history from a variety of different angles, diversifying the monument’s historical narrative using an interactive, visually-stimulating platform to stimulate dialogue and curiosity. the maps and story map will be featured on the national monument’s website and will be publicly accessible.
