This past year a lot of GeoNet members have earned points from participating in the community. A few of our members provided some great feedback on areas where we could improve. The feedback was reviewed to identify suggestions that would benefit the community as a whole.

The following point changes will be made effective January 1, 2016:

  1. Tagging your content is important, so the Tag, you're it mission will now be worth 5 points.
  2. Researcher will no longer be repeatable. Similar to other missions related to creating content you will only be able to earn it one time.
  3. The Helper mission will now be awarded when you receive 3 "helpful" ratings on your discussion responses.
  4. Providing a correct answer and earning the Valedictorian mission will now give you 250 points.

Looks good Timothy.  Is there going to be some tag pruning for Mods.  Currently there is no way to correct/remove misssspellled tags and variants of particular tags.  I know that the 'good' ones will float to the top, but in some cases the possible variants are getting excessively long (ie python ... and variants, or gis

Moderators should be able to modify tags, but let me look into that further next week.

I think these improvement will really help. Glad to see they are getting changed.

Just a note that I don't believe the actual settings have been changed for Helper.

For example, the award:

And the post:

Darren,

I thought the adjustment meant that for every 3 helpfulls you get 100 points (not confined to 3 helpfulls on the same thread). I could be misinterpreting this though.

Oh, that's not how interpreted it, but I see how it is.

For my two cents, I'd prefer a single answer to require three helpfuls to encourage really solid answers rather than diluting points across three potentially lower quality answers that just happen to get marked as helpful (quality vs. quantity).

The gamification engine does not make a distinction between independent helpfuls and helpful on a single reply. I agree that 3 helpfuls on a single reply would be best, but I don't have a way to set that up. Progress in little steps. 100 pts for every 3 helpfuls is better than 100 pts for every helpful.

I agree it is better than it was...more for correct answers, more needed for the 100 helpful points.  But what I think helped the most (and why I think it's ok for it to be across threads) is that it isn't only the first person giving a helpful that would receive points.  I think far more, possibly undeserved helpfuls we're given out last year, just so folks could get their 5 for the day.  Seems to me, that has calmed down, and helpfuls are more meaningful (yea).  my observation and opinion anyway.

Timothy... what is this thing all about? And what prompts it?

Latest Acclaim: Positive feedback on your contributions

Dan, that is typically when someone bookmarks one of your documents or blogs posts.  No points...just notifying you. (guess it is a pat on the back)

DanPatterson_Retired

Ahhh never though of that... they just randomly appear

Rebecca is right on. It's not very descriptive, but those actions are what usually cause that notification.

Timothy Hales, these changes are definitely a step in the right direction.

One question with "Likes?"  I can't recall if they have any points associated with them or not.  Regardless, do they add value, and if so, how?  For example, do more likes affect search results?

I think the changes to "Helpful" are good, but I think there is a larger issue of people marking content as Helpful as a defacto Like because liking something is so misunderstood.

Confusion still...

is ... Like... like Stack Exchange upvote? or is that ... Helpful ... ? or

is ... Like... like the up vote(arrow) by a comment in Stack Exchange? or is that ... Helpful...?

why can you ...unHelpful... something but not ...unLike ... it?

why are ...Helpful... anonymous unless someone Yes'ed it?

why are ...Like..'s  totally anonymous?

The limits are good, but the Helpful's seem to be the only way to tell someone that you Liked a response since it was Helpful. (confusion but interesting)

Likes do not affect the way the content is organized or displayed. Although there are options to give points for likes, we currently do not use that feature.

The helpful is more like the Stack exchange upvote. Although it doesn't quite work the same way, it is very similar. Definitely a lot closer than the like. I did see the Jive was working to incorporate voting similar to Stack Exchange, but I am not sure when that is come.

Also likes are not anonymous. Click the like number and you can see who liked it.
