Photos referenced on the server won't show on the shortlist storymap

I've uploaded my .png photos in the appropriate size (200x150pixels), and put what I think should be the Image URL in the appropriate column. Yet when I upload the .csv file to the online ArcGIS map the 'url' just shows up as a 'More Info' hyperlink that links to a page that won't load. When I put that map in the generic hosted template the images don't show up either.

I have the url exactly as the example shows:

http://downloads.esri.com/blogs/places/austin/stubbs_bbq.png

but with my actual file path.

Is it just a problem with the server? Also what is the difference between having the images on my server, or on a public one like imgur.com, would that affect a lot of things with this template?

Thank you for your help!

[Edit] I have now realized I may have not actually uploaded any files. I just copied and pasted them over, which I'm assuming is not what I needed to do.

Hi Olivia, it sounds like you are not referencing your images via a URL to a publicly accessible web location. Your images need to be on the web at a location so they can be accessed publicly via a URL. When you upload a shapefile CSV containing these URLs into an ArcGIS.com map viewer, the default popup will just show you a 'more info' link, like you describe. But when you display your web map in the Shortlist tmeplate the photos will be displayed correctly if the shapefile or CSV file you added into your web map uses the expected set of shortlist attributes.

If it isn't working still, could you share your web map publicly and put the URL here so we can try it out ourselves and see what is wrong?

It may not be the problem of server. Generally, if you want to open and display an image (like png format), you may upload the image to server with an imaging control in the first place.

As long as the image file you are referencing is publicly accessible on the web somewhere via a URL, it will work. For the Shortlists I have made, I just put my png files into a folder on a web server I have permission to put my files onto, so that each image has a URL, like http://downloads.esri.com/blogs/places/palmsprings/palm_canyon.png. But you could use a photo sharing site instead (just make sure the URL you use to reference your image on the photo sharing site is a URL to the actual image file, not to a page in which the image is embedded).

I then just put the URL for the appropriate image into the IMAGE_URL attribute for the corresponding place in the shapefile or CSV file for each of the point layers in the web map I'm using. The Shortlist template then automatically displays the contents of those layers as tabs: http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/shortlist-palmsprings
