Can't select a different tool in ArcReader

Greetings all,

I've installed ArcReader on a colleague's computer and cannot change the tool from the zoom-in tool to anything else. The same installation and data work fine on other computers. The problem appears with both AR 9.3.1 and with 10. This machine has an AMD processor. Is that the cause or could it be a Java thing or something else altogether?
