consecutive numbers in a field

Hi guys

I know very little coding, and I'm getting myself very confused between who I think consecutive number be created in other databases and who to create them in arcpad studio.

I have a dot shapefile and I want a new consecutive number for each new entry into the shapefile.

I assume it is some form of loop but all I'm really doing is confusing myself.

Ok I figured it out,

does any one knows if there is a beginners guide for idiots for arcpad studio I really would like to know.   Or for similar software.
