ArcPad/Trimble GPS Analyst Choosing wrong .ssf File When Checking Data In and Dif Cor

I recently collected a bunch of field data on a Trimble Geo/XH handheld using ArcPad 7.0 with the Trimble GPS Correct extension.  Two different .ssf files were created in the field, one titled HALE.ssf (HALE is the project name and only has gps data from part of the first day of data collection) and one titled GPSCorrect.ssf.  When I check in the data using the GPS Analyst extension the wizard only notes the HALE.ssf file is checked in and so when I differentially correct the data only part of the first days data is corrected.  I'm pretty sure that the GPSCorrect.ssf file has the rest of the gps data due to the difference in the file size, 23 Megs vs .04 Megs but I can't get the GPSCorrect.ssf to check in with the rest of the field data.

I've tried to switch the names of the files but the wizard still picks the wrong .ssf file.  I've also tried to delete the HALE.ssf file but I then get a visual basic error message that shuts down ArcMap when I tried to check it in.

Has anyone experienced this and figured out how to work around it?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

I encounter this kind of issue before.
If I remember correctly one way to solve this issue was to combine the ssf file.
You can't do this with GPS Analyst, but a software like GPS Pathfinder Office has a tool to do so.
After using this combine tool, you have only one SSF file.
Rename it GPScorrect.ssf and try again the check-in...
It way work. Hope so....

Maybe you do not have a licence of GPS Pathfiner office. You can get an evaluation demo code from your Trimble Reseller. You will have 15 days full trial. Enough to combine your files.

Hope that helps

Julien,

I combined the two .ssf files using Pathfinder and tried to check in the .axf with Arcinfo but the process errors out immediately with the following dialog:

Executing: CheckinAXFFileAndGPScorrectSSF G:\REFUGE\TRAILS\NPS\HALE\Arcpad\HALE\HALE.axf # Deficiency;LR_Trails;Trail_Fe;Trails G:\REFUGE\TRAILS\NPS\HALE\Arcpad\HALE.mdb
Start Time: Fri Jul 01 13:34:16 2011
Importing GPS positions from SSF file: G:\REFUGE\TRAILS\NPS\HALE\Arcpad\HALE\HALE.ssf
ERROR 999998: Unexpected Error.
Failed to execute (CheckinAXFFileAndGPScorrectSSF).
End Time: Fri Jul 01 13:34:16 2011 (Elapsed Time: 0.00 seconds)

I've tried renaming the combined .ssf file HALE and GPSCorrect, the attempt above is one where the HALE.ssf was the combined .ssf.  In the attempt where I renamed the combined file GPSCorrect.ssf it checked in just fine.  But when I tried to differentially correct the data the ??Imported 7-1-201111.51.16 AM from HALE.ssf? showed up in the Select GPS sessions to correct window and didn??t offer the GPSCorrect.ssf file to correct, even when I try and add it to the wizard using the + button.  The wizard can??t find a .ssf file if I replace GPSCorrect with HALE in the name of the GPS session.

I've tried to use Pathfinder's Shape Correct utility to correct the .axf but it errors out almost immediately.

Hi John,

Ok, so the check-in worked; Yes it works only if the SSF file is named GPScorrect.ssf.

Have you tried to use the selection tool of positions in TGA and check if all positions from both sessions have been checked-in ? or only a part of it ?
If you check-in GPScorrect.ssf file there should a session "imported" with the name "GPSCorrect" not "Hale". This is really weird...
Check if all positions are in your arcmap document....just to check if the check-in process works fine.

About the shapecorrect utility, what did you do exactly ?
The process is :
Correct the SSF file from the differential correction wizard of PFO. You will have a COR file.
Copy the cor file in the same folder as the SSF file and the AXF file.

Launch the shapecorrect utility with those three files and correct the axf file. Did you do this ?
What is the exact error message ?

Hope that helps.
