ArcGIS 10 & ArcPad 7.1

Is ArcView 10 not supporting older versions of ArcPad, such as 7.1? We recently upgraded to ArcView 10 and already had ArcPad 7.1 installed on my PC. When I open ArcView 10 on my machine and try to activate the ArcPad 7.1 Data Manager, it is not present. Any ideas?

ArcPad itself is a standalone product, there�??s no �??compatibility�?? needed between it and ArcMap. The only component that is related to ArcMap is the ArcPad Data Manager, and only the ArcPad 10 Data Manager will install correctly with ArcGIS 10. If you are not working within ArcMap 10 and ArcPad 10, when using the ArcPad Data Manager you will not be able to take advantage of its functionalities when using an older version of ArcPad.

The above two posts are slightly incorrect.  ArcPad 7.1.1 and ArcPad 8 are both supported with ArcGIS Desktop 10 if utilizing the ArcPad Data Manager toolbar.  The caveat here is that you must manually register the dll needed to utilize the ArcPad Data Manager toolbar.  Take a look at the following KB article that will walk you through this process:

Problem:  ArcPad Data Manager extension is not visible in ArcMap 10

It's correct that it will only install the functionality available for your particular product version (ie: you won't have the same picture functionality with ArcPad 7.1.1 or 8 that you would with 10, etc.) but it will function exactly how you would expect for your particular version.

Feel free to reply here if you have any trouble manually registering the dll.

I have recently installed the ArcPad 7.1 into ArcMap 10 and had to register the data management extension as had been mentioned in this thread. However , I can now see the data manager extension but nothing is enabled to use. Any ideas ?

You'll need to enable the ArcPad Data Manager extension via the Extensions list.

ArcMap > Customize Menu > Extensions > Check on the ArcPad Data Manager extension

Thanks, I found that in a forum shortly after I had posted it but forgot to reply back. That did the trick for me after I initially had to register the dll to get the data manager to show as others have mentioned.

Did you try the suggestions above?  Checking on the extension, manually registering the dll, etc?  What versions of ArcPad and ArcGIS Desktop are you using?

Thanks!  Works like it should.  I kept going into the toolbar > Customize and seeing it checked.  Hate when I get proven to be an idiot!
