Is it possible to find (and preferably delete) duplicate line versions of polygon features?

Due to historical reasons that it's not necessary to go into, I have series of files where I have duplicate line features for all those that are actually polygons. Unfortunately, the line layer also includes lines that really should be lines, often within the polygons, so I'm looking for a simple way to remove those lines that duplicate polygons, without removing those that don't. I've tried using the select by location, but that finds everything, especially where the lines sit within polygons and the current "Find Duplicate/Delete Duplicate" tools only work on one feature class at a time.

I'm sure this ought to be relatively simple, but I can't see the answer.

I hope someone out there has solved this, as I'm sure this can't be a unique situation.
