I have created a custom vector tile streets basemap and am trying to create a light grey and a dark grey basemap. My railroads are currently brown. The only way I have figured to replace the crosshatches with the color that I need is to create an image that is a teeeeny tiny white polygon and upload it. Is that truly the only way? I tried applying a tint, but since it is brown, and I'm just adding the tint, the cross hatch is darker than the railroad stroke.

@JenniferBorlick - this is one of the limitations of using sprites on line symbols.

Possible solutions:

  • Download the existing sprite, change the color, and upload it again, which should be a better one-for-one match
  • Remove the sprite and use a conventional dash symbol. It may do some funky things if the line is complex, but railroad lines tend to be fairly smooth. Multiple lines in railyards may get a bit messy though.

Thanks to Andy Skinner for the guidance.  See his recently updated blog series: Customizing Esri Vector Basemaps.
