We are using ArcGIS 10.1 and Business Analyst 2012 here on our campus.

We would like to use the demographics data that is Business Analyst but keep running into a problem with how it handles the Study Area's we setup.

Here are the steps we are using:

1. Open Business Analyst 2012

2. From the Business Analyst menu select "Study Area"

3. Select "Create new Study Area"

4. Select "By Zip"

5. Enter in 90210, and click Next

6. Name the Study Area " Beverly Hills 90210", and check the box "Create new project for this Study Area", then click Finish

7. From the Business Analyst menu select "Set Analyst Extent" and make sure "Beverly Hills 90210"

This is fine as it brings up the Zip Code outlined and centers the Map on that location.

The trouble comes in when we do the following:

1. In the Table of Contents open the Demographic Layers (BDS) contents branch, and select "Block Groups"

The block groups are filled in appropriately

2. Right-click the Block Groups entry and select Properties

3. Select the Symbology Tab

4. Change the Value to "2012 per Capita Income"

An error message appears, after a bit of time, saying "Maximum sample size reached. Not all records are being used. Use this sample of change maximum sample size." and then one of three things happens when you click Ok

A) You click OK on the Symbology and it renders the new map correctly, albeit slowly (45% of the time)

B) It crashes ArcMap with a memory error (45% of the time)

C) you click OK on the Symbology window and it will only render some of the data on the map correctly, in some cases only have the Block Groups will be shaded correctly, the others will just be the background map. If you try to refresh the map display it will either crash ArcMap or still only render some of the block groups. (10% of the time)

So my question is this; If I select a Study Area, is there a way to make sure Business Analyst only uses or tries to use the data with in that Study Area, instead of trying to use the whole Demographic Data Set from Business Analyst?

With the help of ESRI support I was able to figure this out. Here are the proper steps:

1. Open Business Analyst 2012

2. From the Business Analyst menu select "Study Area"

3. Select "Create new Study Area"

4. Select "By Zip"

5. Enter in 90210, and click Next

6. Name the Study Area " Beverly Hills 90210", and check the box "Create new project for this Study Area", then click Finish

7. This is fine as it brings up the Zip Code outlined and centers the Map on that location.

8. Open the Demographic Layers (BDS) so that you can see the Block Groups option

9. Right-click on the Beverly Hill 90210 and select Select All

10. From the Selection menu select Select By Location

11. In the Select By Location window set the following:

* Select method = select features from

* Target Layers = Check Demographics Layers (BDS) - Block Groups

* Source Layer = Beverly Hills 90210

* Check = Use Selected Features

* Click Ok

12. In the table of contents Right-Click Demographics Layers (BDS) - Block Groups and select Selection - Create Layer from Selected Features

13. A new layer will now appear, with those that intersect the selected Study Area, which you can change the symbology on as you want.

Thanks to ESRI Support for their help with this.
