Zoning Map & land use analysis

I have 2 zoning feature layers, just simple polygons. One is existing zones, one is future zones. I have a semi/non-GIS person telling me what it is that is needed and I am a little out of practice on how to tackle this:
1. run an assessment to find out what doesn't align
2. subtract out what doesn't align (remove it)
3. determine what the biggest land use is along the major corridors.
