I'm trying to reorder fields in ArcGIS Pro and it's the most unintuitive process ever. I swear it works different each time.
I drag a field to go below another one and it puts it on top.
Has anyone from ESRI actually used this feature? I think it needs to be looked at because it's BAD. I honestly can't believe how long something this simple is taking to do.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Kory, I appreciate your effort answering our questions, no doubt about it. Also, I understand it's your job to keep this community alive by spreading the official word of ESRI brightest visionars. I have no problem with that whatsoever.
Frankly, my problem are such answers like "please give me some more input about... , so I can make sure the developer team is aware of it"... Plain waste of time, please don't do that to us.
First, the issue Ian Broad is describing is so very, very simple. Reordering fields. Just simple that. Please let me put it this way. There is nothing much to say about it. Just let the developer team reorder those fields. And not to forget, let them do it EVERY DAY. Just like we, ordinary user do it. I am absolutely sure, ESRI developer will in no time get some very clear idea, this reordering of fields is not very elegant, it's clunky.
Second, what tells us, ordinary user, the fact that reordering of fields is so clunky? To me, it means, nobody took no time to TRY how it is to reorder fields on daily basis. Why is that? Because, the whole unfortunate attribute table operation doesn't mean a thing to ESRI, that is what I am positive about. Nobody at developer department cares about attribute table. And that puts in misery all us, daily data Jongleurs, who put new data and edit data EVERY DAY.
And than, ESRI let us VOTE about this and every other BASIC FUNCTION AND OPERATION with attribute table. My brain hurts. So much time wasted. For how long is ArcGIS Pro on the market now? Years. And what happened in that time? Nothing. Not a single improvement for attributes table handling as far as I can remember. And I follow that. Guess why? Because I need it so desperately. Copy /paste of a cell? Not possible. Search function? Nope. Sorting of columns? A matter of artifical intelligence, it does what it wants... Need more problems, weird situations, unreasonable behaviour of application? Calculate field? The app closes, bang and gone is!
Now, why is that? ESRI has got not enough resources to develop a decent attribute table operation? I don't think so. Then what? I don't now. You tell me. I pay that application and I don't have got an answer. For now, I am very disappointed about the way ESRI treats attribute table, yes indeed.
Yes, that is not AI, IOT, 3D, drones, satellites, planets... That draws no attention on Congress, fairs, discussion panels, nobody can write a PhD about it. Not so shiny thing to talk about. But we live that, that's what lot of people do for living. And that matters a lot to them, if they are able to do their job quick and elegant and not clunky.
My suggestion to ESRI, let the voting alone, that completely waste of our time and do some really useful coding for us!
Cheers!
Ian. I've noticed usability issues when trying to move fields to either the very top or very bottom. And moving the Shape field seems to always want to sit one row higher than where I actually drop it.
Are there other specific things that you're noticing so that we can make sure that team is aware of them?
Thanks
Thanks, Ian.

Re-ordering fields is an old old old issue with ArcGIS. In the days of .mdb we could simply re-order field in MS Access. But now that people are pulled away from Desktop and using Pro they have to utilize .gdb
There are several ideas out there in support of allowing permanent reordering of fields in Catalog.
LOL - one of the most flexible databases at there and what does ESRI do.... remove it in pro as an option. I deal with multiple platforms and data each and every day... MS Access is my collector and workhorse shaping the data for input into other data sources and APPLICATIONS.... not one of which understands a file geodatabase. Now if I go to the herculean task of migrating to a file geodatabase - It doe not accept 60% of standard SQL..... How this relates to ordering fields (it was a brainless operation in MS Access).
