As a rule, I run the Repair Geometry GP tool on any shapefile or fGDB feature classes (polygon, arc) that I download or am uncertain about. This works OK with a Basic license. I have found that data from official sources often have geometry errors or anomalies that get repaired. I don't deal with enterprise geodatabases. I wonder if some of the problems the average Basic license user encounters might be due to problems with faulty feature class geometry.
Any comments or experiences on the pros and cons of running this tool (or Check Geometry if you only want a report without repairing).
