How to get Selected Features into Model Builder?

I am encountering an odd problem...  all tools (e.g. Merge) work on the set of selected features, how ever if a layer with selected features is set as model input, the selection is ignored, i.e. all features considered.

How to get only a user-picked selection into the model builder?
