Hey Don, 

Sorry for the super super late response. So I did figure out a way to make it work. Using a free trial of FME Safe Software, I used the .dwg to shapefile tool and it worked perfectly. Would you mind taking a look at the original dwg file? What would the best way for me to send it to you?

I would love to figure out a way to do this with out FME.
