Bring up the symbology pane when a layer's TOC patch is clicked even if the symbology pane is hidden (not closed). Clicking the patch will bring up the pane if it's pinned and inactive/behind another tab, or even unpinned and closed, but not if it's unpinned and open. I've had it come up once or twice, but not consistently.
