In ye olden days, I enjoyed being able to use ArcCatalog as a GIS-savvy file explorer. I could open it and quickly zip around my files to get a quick glance. I usually keep Catalog open on my computer for these reasons. Sometimes a glance is all I need, and I can close the catalog and be done with it. If I wanted to do something with what I found, I could quickly open up a map document and drag the data that I had already navigated to over to the document.

Now, the process is much more cumbersome - the word "quickly" no longer applies. I still use ArcCatalog for those exploring and previewing and purposes since there is no true Pro equivalent. The catalog view doesn't quite meet my needs - you have to add it as a tab, and it doesn't remember folder connections (or at least the ones it remembers are specific to the project you happen to have open). Further, if you drag it out into its own window, it's useless, as the contents/catalog tree doesn't come with it. It's also impossible to drag into your map's TOC if you drag it out into its own window, as the TOC changes to reflect Catalog View. But I have to use both ArcCatalog and Catalog View, since I cannot drag and drop feature classes or shapefiles from ArcCatalog into an ArcGIS Pro project.

I believe a beefed up Catalog View, offered as a standalone application, would resolve many of these issues.

I gave up on this a long time ago. My personal work a round was to create a project called "Catalog" with no maps and all my standard databases and folders already connected. I also store all of my .sde files in it and all of my standard custom GP Tools and styles as well so I can access them quickly from any project. I pinned it to the Open menu and have shortcuts to it. It doesn't take too long to open, because no maps are active, I can perform most administrative functions either from the catalog pane or the catalog view. It's not exactly the same, but it's better than nothing, and I don't see much interest from ESRI to actually create a separate app just for Catalog.

Don't you try a standalone configuration of ArcGIS Pro with XTools Pro Catalog?

@SeaRM , I haven't tried XTools in years, but it was always a great tool so this is worth trying. Would it still require opening an ArcGIS Pro session before accessing Catalog?

It's a separate ArcGIS Pro configuration. It can be open and used on its own. The shortcut is available in XTools installation folder.

What I like about ArcCatalog:

1-I can visually see the data organization tree that I designed and can take "ownership" of my processes.

2-My interim processing junk data is easily found and cleaned up after getting to a finished result/product.

3-my "Favorites" are in the global context and not the project context which is rewarding to see the organization grow as the overall GIS data bank grows.

Really wondering if we will get this by 2026. It seems wrong to kill off ArcCatalog before a replacement is ready. My org has already disabled any new installs of ArcMap/Catalog. The lack of a replacement is going to kill my productivity.

Short of miracle, ESRI is not going to change @wayfaringrob . Your best bet is to look at XTools Pro if you need stand alone. I have spoken in the past to the Andrei Elobogoev (at XTools). They are great and responsive and they understand what the GIS user needs and is looking for.

The tools that they have developed come from the needs of actually listening to the GIS community in which ESRI has kinda acknowledge that there is an issue / problem but shrugs their shoulders and will not budge on this one.

Keep this in mind - ArcGIS Pro 1x was released in Q1 of 2015 for some perspective. I am still today finding features that are missing from Pro vs. ArcMap. The product is not on parity. Yes, there are some nice features in Pro but the things we lost you have to shake your head.

@jcokin1  I'm not very familiar with that, but the idea of another paid tool to take care of the shortcomings of an even more expensive paid tools does not sit well with me. Esri needs to be pressured to address the needs of their paying customers. I've never worked with software--free or paid--that's so willfully neglected.

I second this @wayfaringrob. I dont want to pay for a tool that Esri once offered and then took away. ArcCatalog was a very useful tool for data management and geoprocessing (like projecting layers) without having to open a map. They just need to bring it back.

I made a project called "Catalog" and connected it to everything.  I have a number of issues with pro.  Big ones include it thinking forever whenever you click something.  Stealing the focus when loading, document paths not being as verbose as before (I still have to hunt down the layout and map once I find the project),  anything having to do with tables.  Switching maps and having tables from another map front and center to confuse me (can they color code?)   Callout text takes several steps to create and is confusing.  Calculate fields with a join or relate takes forever, and on and on.
